Daily Discussion - Do You Read Hair Magazines ?

271533432_med Do you read hair magazines like Hype Hair, Sophisticates Black Hair Styles, Style Hair Magazine, etc.? Do you find them helpful? What have you learned and which ones, if any, are your favorites?

sometimes i like sophisticates the best they have a natural hair care section. i currently wear a relaxer but i have been thinking about going natural for some time the down side of the mags is that almost every one wears weaves its hard to get pointers because of this

Macherie: Yeah, I fee the same.

Love your blog!
I buy all the hair mags every few months but mainly just for styles. They cost so much!! I dont think there is much in the way of practical information and all 3 pretty much have the same articles.

But I still buy them....and keep them..LOL

I purchase Sophisticate Hair Style Magazine more for the styles. Their information is very minimal and don't give much depth. So every couple of months I will purchase one if I am thinking of styling my hair. For instance I want to get a sewn weave done, see what styles I like to get.

Personally I think they are a waste of money. I use to purchase them but no anymore. They cost alot and minimal info for ladies who don't wear weaves!!!

I used to buy sophisticates and blackhair a UK magazine but I stopped as the limited natural hair sections tended to focus on the hair of women from mixed backgrounds with loose curls or women who texturise which I personally didn’t find helpful.

My mom brought one hair care magazine for me, Sophisticates when I was 12. Thankfully in the issue it had an article about Aaliyah having natural hair and using the flat iron to straighten her hair. That helped me make the decision to transition, after being tex-laxed 3 times. In that same issue I read about another woman who didn't use heat on her hair her ENTIRE life( she was in her twenties) and her hair was super long. I read that one magazine over and over again.I'm too cheap to buy another one.

I purchase Hype Hair and Sophisticates every so often just to look at the styles. I am a pj so I often like to look and see what new products are out for hair and skin care. Sometimes they have helpful information, but more than anything I guess I sort of collect them lol.

I used to when I was in high school (I'm 27 now), but that was when I was really into different styles. I bought them to get ideas...Now, I've actually learned how to take care of my hair through your hair blog (THANK GOD FOR YOU!!!) and others and honestly, my hair is at it's healthiest than it's ever been. My staple style now is the doobie wrap and when I'm lazy, I put up a bun and go.

well i am a magazine junkie...however i have decided to stop buying hair magazines...because i've noticed they show more hair styles and not enough information. i rather have information than pictures. good topic!

Like Cee Jay I used to buy hair magazines for styles but as a natural girl they don't show many options other than extensions or weave. Very rarely I find a braid style, and try to get it done with my own hair.

I used to buy these magazines for the styles, but I stopped because I noticed that it was geared towards women with weaves. I am natural and they don't have any articles on how to grow our own hair.

i dont find any of the articles interesting, but they do have great black hair and skin products in their ads and thats what i look for. They also have beautiful hairstyles, but there is no real depth.

Every now and then I would find myself buying a black hair magazine, but then it would just sit there unread! I thought I would use them for new styles, but would usually have my stylist just do whatever she felt would suit my face, and my own personal style, since she knows me. Eventually, I began to realize that the advice in the magazines was pretty much the same every month, so if I really wanted to look through it, I would just grab a latte at Barnes & Noble or a couch at Border's and read through it. I can spend that $5 on a yummy soy chai latte that satisfies rather than on a magazine that collects dust and fills my recycling bin.
