Q: I was curious if it was safe to get hairstyles like french rolls with spritz, fingerwaves, scrunchies, etc. Is that healthy on a per week or every other week basis? With that being said, these styles will not allow for the prepoo, correct? What do you advise?
A: Well, here is my take on the weekly styles, particularly the ones done at salons (Ill just clear out my inbox now;)). On one hand, these styles are great because your hair is often in a protective style (style which protects your ends and hair from manipulation and friction). With french rolls, in particular, you hair is up off of your shoulders and pulled back neatly.
On the other hand, the problem is that these styles, if meant to last the whole week, require a ton of product and direct heat to keep them "set". These products, like gels and hairspray, tend to have a high alcohol content, which can be very drying to the hair. Adding direct heat to the mix will only dry out the hair even more.
Furthermore, since the hair is styled, it is difficult to maintain the hair in between visits. So, you might not be able to moisturize properly and brush it on a daily basis. Brushing or wide tooth combing the hair on a daily basis helps distribute the natural oils from your scalp to the ends of the hair, where it is needed most.
Hope this helps!
